The news of yesterday's EF5 tornado that swept through the town of Moore, Oklahoma is gut-wrenching. Two schools filled with teachers and children, entire neighborhoods and businesses will never be the same.


"When tragedy strikes, everyone wants to help." said Mechele Agbayani Mills, President and CEO of BBB Serving Central East Texas. “As we reach out, please keep in mind that organizations and web sites allegedly created to help victims and relief efforts will spring up overnight, so it’s very important to do your research to make sure your efforts go where you intend and that they get there quickly.”

Red Cross emergency response vehicle heading to North Texas

Volunteers from the Smith County Chapter of the American Red Cross depart to help our North Texas neighbors.

Volunteers Amanda Hardisty and Gary Garsee, on stand-by alert since last night, departed early this morning to help the victims of last nights tornados.

According to Tyler Police, the emergency alert sirens failed to operate correctly this morning. Officials are working to fix the problem. We will update with more information and/or new emergency alert test times.

Project Tornado blows into Jackson Elementary

On Wednesday, KLTV Chief Meteorologist Mark Scirto took his Project Tornado presentation to the second graders of Jackson Elementary School.

From 9:30-10:30 a.m., Mr. Scirto spoke with the group of  100 students who, he said, were very well-behaved and smart. They learned the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning, and what to do if a tornado comes to their own neighborhoods, among many other things.

The kids thought the coolest thing he taught them was that during a thunderstorm,  they  should not  take a bath or shower!

They also thought it was funny that Mr. Scirto told them when he was their age, he'd hide under the covers...head and all!

With proper maintenance and preventive care for your A/C unit, you may be able to avoid a broken system this summer. BBB recommends planning ahead to make sure that your air conditioner is working properly when the temperatures are high.

“Residential heating and cooling units are expected to last 15 to 20 years”, said Mechele Agbayani Mills. “So choosing a good HVAC tech is vital to your home’s comfort for years to come”.
